New haircut, same messy office shelves.

New haircut, same messy office shelves.

Update at 5 Pm Friday! Just as the whistle is blowing….

Chaos Chronicles Podcast 231 is up! I announce the winners of our Marble Racers Give-away! Plus, Is Lian a go-to girl in an emergency? Your letters on Bad Teachers and Bad Men.  And a chance to vote for your favorite ( or least favorite) Celebrity Author Moms!

And, if you haven’t filled out the survey for Prof. Alan on podcast listening habits, this is your last chance! We can do it, Chaos Crew. This takes about ten minutes and will provide regular listener and important academic Prof. Alan with vital research! Plus, I want to win the informal race going on who sends the most people to take the survey.

Now back to the regularly scheduled To Do List…

I don’t know where the week went. It’s Friday and I haven’t quite gotten to do the show yet! You know how it is: you have a finely constructed timeline with little or no wiggle room to get you from 6 in the morning until 9 at night. And all it takes is one overly -long meeting ( Happened.) , one unexpected phone call ( Yes.) and one early house guest (Check.) and your whole schedule falls apart.

Me yesterday.

So me today is trying to regroup.

So I will  record the show and pull the winner of the Marble Racers later today ( Entries are closed… but, you can still friend me on Facebook) .

In the meantime, here’s my To Do List the next few days…

Countdown to the Gracies continues Liz and I will be handing out an award this year at the Gracie Allen Awards in ten days. They are in Los Angeles so that means no traveling but extra glam on the actual celebrities who will be our fellow presenters. This is where a normal person like me has to adjust expectations and  work with what I got.  I bought the dress last week, managing to find a long gown almost identical to the short gown Liz wore two years ago. ( I did text her before buying to make sure she did not have plans to recycle the dress.)

This morning, I am doing as Sheila advised, getting a haircut and fresh highlights.

Tomorrow, my rigorous new skin care regime continues with my first glycolic peel.  ( More on the podcast about my new skin care regime, courtesy of!) For the next ten days, lots of water and lean protein!  Working with what I got, people.

Vote Not on anything life-changing, but the editors at have put together some fun lists about Celebrity Author Moms.  ( Who knew there were so many? 50 and counting in the Celebrity Author Mom category!) All my time reading magazines at the orthodontist has been well spent. I am prepared to weigh in on the Most Controversial Author Celebrity Author Mom or the Most Revealing Celebrity Author Mom. Have some free time this weekend? Want to see a list that contains Tatum O’Neil, Martha Stewart and Courtnay Love? Then head to Maybe you’ll be as surprised as I was to see that Barbara Walters qualifies as a Celebrity Author Mom!

Off to hairdressers! Then into Closet.

Embracing my Chaos, Lian

OK, so things are running late here on the Priarie and I only just got done with last week’s cast (while transplanting tomatoes and sweet potatoes no less).

Re: what do we tell our boys:

I don’t know what I’d say to a boy other than ‘don’t be a jerk, don’t be a drunk…’ but I would say that there’s a LOT of work to be done with girls who are so often willing to put up with bad behavior. I mean: REALLY? did she not see this coming? And I’m NOT blaming her at all — I’m just thinking about the messages our girls get from such cultural icons as Disney and the “twilight” series. I watch my now five year old girl and middle-school nieces absorbing these messages and they are all about 1) marrying men you meet in the middle of the forest and you don’t know and 2) making stupid choices — look at Ariel in Little Mermaid — she gives up her voice to “get the guy” and Ursula tells her to ‘use her body’ to do so. And Belle aka Beauty – don’t get me started — isn’t the message of that movie “love him hard enough and he’ll change?” “see in him what no-one else can?” In fact, in Orlando this winter I was repeatedly shocked when the Belle characters would ask my daughter “where’s your beast? did you leave him at home?”

And DON’T get me started on “Twilight” — isn’t the message there “he won’t kill me because he loves me even though he wants to hurt me and that’s sooooo attractive?!”

I live at a boarding high school and work with adolescent girls a lot and my message to them is: pay attention: how they treat their mothers and the others in their life as that is how they will treat you – why wouldn’t they? If you’re not planning on changing, either are they, tell him “thanks for the information” and move on!

Didn’t know there was such fury in the Prairie, no?!

I like how you deal with the glitches that life throws your way.. with humor and grace, not losing sight of what matters most…your family…. I think you are amazing …an inner glow is there with or without a “peel” I am sure… I also love your hair… the story of finding your dress is so familiar… for what its worth your podcast is my favorite by far and deserves to “win”

Now that I am already to Sunday, my to do list is:
Gear up for my last week as an intern. So not feeling it….
Get myself psyched up for summer. Camps for one, not sure about the other.
Get ready for next weekend. My best girlfriends are coming to me. Nothing like my best friends, baseball, good food, and plenty of commiserating over wine and dessert.

Love the hair, Lian!

Thanks for all the nice comments. wow. Merci.

Chpliver– I had to laugh at your comment. Believe me, I was stunned, but this company CEO had a Google alert on the word “glycolic”! How funny is that? At all these blogging conferences i go to, other bloggers complain about getting TOO many free smaples and all this stuff and I’m always thinking, “I get nothing. Nada.”

Frankly, I’m not a big fan of free stuff because then you get pressured to mention it. And that becomes a slippery slope.

So I wouldn’t go “public” unless I really liked the product. Especially in the skin care category where so many outrageous claims are made. But I just completed my first glycolic peel and i gotta say, my skin looks fresh!

Just listened to the podcast. So, first it was JJill who called and sent you some pants. Now you get a call out of the blue for a skin care regime? Hmmmm, I’m just sayin’ you better buy a lottery ticket!

Yes, Lian I second what Cyndi said, you look super slim and healthy! Your hair looks adorable – wow – staying-out-of the kitchen during the after school hours is really working out for you! Seeing how great you look is a wonderful motivator to continue the “cause”! :)

Cyndi May 14, 2010 at 5:33 PM
