Chaos Chronicles Podcast 501: 2012 Theme? Do The Work

by Lian on January 12, 2012

A former cardio instuctor at the gym used to motivate the class by calling out, “You’re here. You might as well do the work.” She was right. As long as I had bothered to get to class– with kids, a job, a long To Do list of ‘more important’ items–  I might as well do the work. Her encouragement always made me squat a little deeper and lift a little higher.

When I was thinking about my theme for 2012, the phrase “Do the Work” kept circling through my brain. It seemed exactly what I needed to focus on for 2012. I have another book to write, relationships to repair or rekindle,  one teenager to through college applications and one teenager to get through freshmen year of high school. That’s some work there. Not that I can’t have fun along the way or that I’ll be all work and no play. But the phrase Do the Work seems to fit the effort and intention I need to make 2012 successful, personally and professionally.

Hey, 2012! I’m here. I might as well Do The Work.

What’s you theme for 2012?

My theme this year is: Be the Agent of Change. There are some areas in my life that will get an overhaul this year and I plan to find a literary agent and make the connections I need to have a successful writing career.

Do the work channels a little of Mel Robbins for me, and much of the reason I am doing the two job thing for now. I listened to part of this show in prep for a Frozen Buns 5K (25 degrees at show time) and I took the mantra with me during the race. Always makes me smile to her you, Lian, talk about me! :)

I like this theme as well, since I am notorious for having good intentions but never acting on them! This year is my call to action on these intentions.

Great theme Lian! My theme for the year is Clear the Clutter. I am hoping it will help with the, um, situation in my basement!

Good luck Lian with the college process … that is no small task!

I like your “Do the work” theme – it is one of my personal goals this year as well. I read recently that it is less important to do things right and more important to do the right things. There are a million different variations on that same thought, but it struck me that for a while, I’ve been doing certain things right or really well, but they are not getting me where I want to be. I’m trying to ask myself daily if I’m doing the RIGHT thing – putting time/energy to moving forward or doing something that really matters.

My theme is year is faith – relying more on faith and trust – I know this will be a great year. Best of luck achieving your goals!
